Huawei implied that its P9 phone took this professional photo

When we reviewed Huawei’s P9 a few months ago, the fresh camera tech was a source of optimism for the Chinese handset.

But the company has recently oversold just how good the snapper is, strongly implying in a Google+ post that the phone was behind the photo below. It’s since apologised and reassured customers that it never intended to mislead them with the pic.

“We managed to catch a beautiful sunrise with Deliciously Ella,” the original post read. “The #HuaweiP9’s dual Leica cameras makes taking photos in low light conditions like this a pleasure. Reinvent smartphone photography and share your sunrise pictures with us. #OO”

Google’s social media platform makes EXIF metadata available for all pictures posted on it, though, meaning more sceptical members of the internet were able to hunt down the truth.

The data, coincidentally unearthed over the weekend by Android Police, stated the picture was actually taken by a £2,000 Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR, paired with a £1,500 lens – whoops.

The tech company then released a statement saying: “It has recently been highlighted that an image posted to our social channels was not shot on the Huawei P9.

“The photo, which was professionally taken while filming a Huawei P9 advert, was shared to inspire our community. We recognise though that we should have been clearer with the captions for this image.

“It was never our intention to mislead. We apologise for this and we have removed the image.”

Ah well, at least we feel inspired.
