Google’s original Chromecast was a bit of a revelation for many users, letting them bring online content to their big-screen TVs with the ease of a plug-and-play solution – and for such a low price, too. And even though there’s been no shortage of competition in the media-streaming space, Google’s option remains hard to beat. But it’s been a long time since the Chromecast first landed, and over the years we’ve seen the arrival of new Chromecast hardware, including devices like Chromecast Audio. All this hardware, including units from other manufacturers that support the same streaming protocols, falls under the greater banner of Google Cast, and now Google’s finally making a change to its Chromecast app to reflect just how far this ecosystem has come.
Later this week, Google will rebrand its Chromecast app as Google Cast. You’ll still be able to connect to the same steaming hardware as before, but the updated name makes it clear that there’s plenty to casting beyond using the familiar Chromecast.
Google highlights such hardware in the form of the new VIZIO SmartCast P-Series of displays, which comes with integrated Google Cast support. As more and more users turn to devices like these which require no external Chromecast, this week’s rebranding is only going to make more sense.
Look for that new name coming to your Chromecast app on Android and iOS over the course of the next few days.
