Lenovo Ideapad S10 Netbook

Lenovo Ideapad S10 running Ubuntu Intrepid (ver 8.10).

Base configuration purchased for 0. From parts already littering my office, upgraded to 2GB RAM and added a Seagate Momentus 7200 rpm HD (2.5" SATA) . Then added a bluetooth module (internal) purchased on eBay for and 3rd-party batteries (6 and 9-cell for about each on eBay). Performs well given the specifications. One thing it can do that my Macbook Air (ironically designed for ultimate mobility) cannot is function normally (fully open) on a plane seat tray in coach and last ~ 8 hours. However, unlike the MB Air, writing for long stretches on a netbook is frustrating.

Also, note that Lenovo has designed access to RAM, hard drive and bluetooth caddy to be trivial. This was an important criterion for me in deciding on the Lenovo vs. others (e.g. the Acer Aspire One).

I’m using Dropbox in the cloud and Grsync (Linux) and ChronoSync (Mac) for background automated file synchronization, Google Gears for offline editing of Google Documents, Datacase on the iPhone to exchange files from email, web or FTP via WiFi using its embedded server (almost negates need for cellular card and data plan on the netbook), and creation of backup images using Bubackup (for Ubuntu). These supporting applications have increased my appreciation of netbook and cloud computing. But, one should not trust or become dependent on a single cloud solution (e.g. risk of data loss) and security of files is still an issue. In other words, encryption.

Netbooks are light, small, cheap, sufficient for common tasks and arguably "disposable". The Ideapad S10 is solid – consistent with Lenovo’s history of building pragmatic and durable hardware. Ergonomically, there are some inherent weaknesses due to size as well as design. I’d like to see netbooks continue to move toward novel design features that leverage the niche they are building. For example, small PgUp/PgDn buttons on the side (in the back) to allow document navigation with one hand (like an electronic book reader). When carrying this in a messenger bag whether on my bike, foot, or even in the car, I’m less anxious about theft or damage as well.

Any other thoughts on unique design features? Or uses?

Does anybody know of a good laptop comparable to the Lenovo Ideapad Y580?

This is my first time buying a laptop and I have my eye on the Lenovo Ideapad Y580, but its just a little too pricy for me. I would like to stick with lenovo or Asus. Does anybody know good laptop that is comparable to that computer?

A few things I would like the computer to have are
– A Core i7 or i5 Processor
– A blue-ray player
– A back-lit keyboard

Otherwise I’m open to suggestions. Thanks!
